Cantwell Cliffs
Cantwell Cliffs is an essential part of the Hocking Hills State Park system, which includes six other remarkable hiking areas: Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave, Rock House, Conkle's Hollow, Cedar Falls, and Hemlock Bridge Trail leading to Whispering Cave. Visitors are sure to cherish their explorations for years to come. With its rich forested landscapes and stunning natural wonders, the Hocking Hills State Park system features over 25 miles of hiking trails that beckon adventurers to discover their beauty.
From a hiker's perspective, Cantwell Cliffs is one of those places to get a great workout and find some unusual features like the long stone steps cut between two rock walls, a very slim path that used to be called Fat Man's Squeeze, and then of course, the cliffs. It's definately not a place to drag the kids safely, although people do all the time.
From reviews: Some of the trail can be sketchy like the many broken steps that people have to scale more than well, step.
The Experience: There are winding, narrow passages, steep inclines, and cliffs that will take your breath away as they drop dramatically into the valley below.
Keep your dog on a 6-foot leash and in good spirits if you’re taking him for a walk. Be sure to control them because some of the road can be difficult. The stairs in some places are really rough, and this is especially hard on older dogs. A very steep climb with narrow steps that some dogs can’t really manage, so be ready for that. And you have major cliff falls so be sure to watch your pup!
Highlights: immediately after the rock staircase, turn right, and "The Squeeze" is the small opening that will take you to the lower trail.
And the trail itself, it begins and ends at the Parking Area and is more than two miles in length with two one-mile loops. Each loop is about 60-80 minutes hike so make that count. Enjoy your adventure!
