Conkle's Hollow

Conkle's Hollow is an essential part of the Hocking Hills State Park system, which includes six other remarkable hiking areas: Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave, Rock House, Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, and Hemlock Bridge Trail leading to Whispering Cave. Visitors are sure to cherish their explorations for years to come. With its rich forested landscapes and stunning natural wonders, the Hocking Hills State Park system features over 25 miles of hiking trails that beckon adventurers to discover their beauty.

From a hiker’s perspective, Conkle’s Hollow offers a sweet treat on both a lower, partially wheelchair-accessible trail and an upper rim trail for those who don’t mind a heart-racing trip along the very edge of a trail (there’s an outlaw trail about three feet away paralleling the scarier-right-along-the-edge trail).

From reviews: If you are afraid of heights or have little kids, the upper trail is one of the trails you should avoid. There are no rails; the trail is right on the ledge with cliff drops for almost 2 miles. There are also no pets allowed. Toward the end, there is an area that used to have some stairway, but the steps are entirely gone, and it is a not-so-charming butt-slide or clamber for a little less than a stone’s throw.

Conkle's Hollow upper trail. 2 mile hike.

The Look: Rugged cliffs, steep ledges and tiny recess caves make this remote trail a wonderful hike for the adventurous.  There is an  upper and lower trail. The lower trail is wheelchair accessible. The upper trail is rugged and treacherous with cliff overhangs. As always, cliff areas are not safe for pets and children!

Dogs are NOT allowed in Conkle's. It is a nature preserve.

Interesting things to look for:   Cliffs, a meandering stream, enormous hemlocks and rock formations make the lower hiking trail a wonderful adventure.  The Grotto, a cave along the trail, has a local legend attached to it-a band of Native Indians were said to bury treasure there and their ghosts still haunt the cave to protect it.

Length: There is an Upper Trail and Lower Trail:

The Lower Trail is ¾ mile long, one-way, wheelchair-accessible trail. It takes about 1 hour to hike the trail.

The Upper Trail is a one-way trail that is 2 miles long.
