Backpacking Hocking Hills - Zaleski State Forest
Bet you don't know what the second largest forest system is in Ohio. Well, it is the Zaleski State Forest. Located close to the picturesque Lake Hope State Park, and it’s an ideal spot for those who love adventure and the great outdoors. It has a backpack trail winding its way through the forest with great views and an invigorating experience up and down hills. Hikers can do parts of the backpack trail or all of the trail.

The Selinde Roosenburg Backpack Trail was created in the forest to offer backpacking opportunities while highlighting some educational, scenic, and historical aspects of the area. The main trail forms a loop that spans 28.8 miles, and there is an additional 10-mile day loop available for shorter hikes. In 2016, a trailhead was added at Hope Schoolhouse, featuring a 2-mile connector that leads to the main trail.
Camping is only permitted in designated campsites. All campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis and there are no reservations. Hikers must register prior to entering the trail at either trailhead location.
The backpack campsites are primitive and offer a latrine and potable water year-round. Water caches may not be serviced in winter due to bad road conditions. We advise backpackers to carry their own water.
